The King is Alice’s father. A hapless loser with a penchant for get-rich-quick schemes and (much) younger strippers. He’s nice enough, but takes irresponsibility to an art form.

Thinking himself a bit of a charmer, he truly believes that he’s doing the right thing and spends his life in constant astonishment that he might be judged by others as a bit of a selfish moron (once they’ve got to know him, at least).

Whenever he bothers to get in touch with Alice, it’s usually to ask her for a loan, or to invest in his latest business venture.

When she politely turns him down, he feels very bad for her that she hasn’t got his vision or entrepreneurial spirit.
